Best Hose for Commercial Lawn Sprayers
Most commercial lawn sprayers use 300 ft. of 1/2" hose with a 600 or 800 PSI pressure rating. The most common hose is a PVC material with a Urethane blend. PVC tends to be stiff at low temperatures. The urethane additive makes the hose softer and more flexible. Some hoses have a ribbed cover, some smooth. Since these hoses are usually long, a smooth cover will pull through the grass more easily.
1/2" hose is the most commonly used size on commercial lawn sprayers because of pressure drop. On a 300 ft. length, the pressure drop is 150 PSI on 3/8", 35 PSI on 1/2" and 5 PSI on 3/4" at a 3 GPM flow. The problem with the 3/4" hose is weight. It's not just the weight of the hose: a 3/8" x 300 ft. hose will hold 16# of water, 28# with 1/2" and 60# on 3/4". Dragging a 3/4" hose around all day gets old! 1/2" seems to be the preferred choice. The spray gun or nozzle should attach to the hose with a live swivel and offer a variable spray pattern.
If the same equipment is used for tree spraying, the operating pressure is usually higher with a different handgun / nozzle selection for tree spraying.
Recent enforcement of some old OSHA rules may require hydraulic style crimped end connections on all liquid and air hoses. Past connections using Bandit or other systems may no longer be allowed. Crimped fittings are usually superior.
